Have you ever been sexually fetishized because of your race or ethnicity? This month, Sexual + Being writers Demetrius Figueroa and Estefani Alarcon talked about what it’s like to be treated as someone’s “Latin lover.” (Spoiler alert: It’s not great.)
Here’s what else we talked about this April! Follow us on IG and Twitter and then check out these April highlights.
Did you know that April is STD Awareness Month? We took the opportunity to raise awareness while de-stigmatizing the conversation around having an STD:
April is STD/STI Awareness Month! We'll be sending out resources and graphics throughout to reinforce the fact that STDs happen and that's OKAY.
Let's break the stigma and get real about dealing with STD/STIs in DC : https://t.co/UVhr19xCP7 #DCBeings #STDMonth pic.twitter.com/QHbdpvLzzC

And here are our three favorite sex positive culture moments of April:
Charlize Theron publicly embraced her daughter’s gender identity.
Superstar Charlize Theron has two adopted children, one of whom doesn’t conform to her gender assigned at birth. While Theron doesn’t use the word “transgender” to describe her daughter at this point, she has made it clear that she’ll do everything she can to support her.
“My job as a parent is to celebrate them and to love them and to make sure that they have everything they need in order to be what they want to be,” Theron said. “And I will do everything in my power for my kids to have that right and to be protected within that.”
HBCU Morehouse announced that they’ll be admitting trans men.
Morehouse, the all-male historically black college, announced this month that they’ll be opening up admissions to trans men. Starting in 2020, anyone man can apply, regardless of their gender assigned at birth. It’s a huge step forward for LGBTQIA rights at an institution that has deep roots in the Baptist Church.
Sex work continued to be a focus for 2020 Democratic candidates.
Sex workers rights activists have been making a stir lately — and it looks like their work is paying off. For the first time, sex workers rights and the decriminalization of sex work have become talking points for Democratic presidential candidates.
The latest to throw her support behind sex workers is Stacey Abrams, who didn’t come out for full decriminalization, but did make it clear that she thinks it’s the government’s job to help keep sex workers safe. Stay tuned for more as the 2020 election heats up.
