This World AIDS Day, we sat down with WPGC host Joe Clair and his brother Stephen C. Bridges to talk about stigma and HIV treatment. Stephen, who has been living with HIV for over 30 years, reflected on his experience of having a family who was very supportive during his diagnosis, while also acknowledging that many of his friends didn’t have a home to return to during the holidays.
Research shows family can help provide stability, as well as motivation to stay on HIV medication, which in the long run can help eliminate the risk of transmitting HIV and keep people healthy. However, for many people, family support just isn’t available. So this month, we’ll be sharing ways that people in the DC area can find support outside of their biological families.
